Jakarta Bombing - 09/09 2004
I was still sleeping when my cell phone rang at 06:56 am CET. When I looked at the screen I knew the call had to be from Indonesia, who else would call me at such an indecent time?
A pathetic "hmmm...?" was all I managed to get out. On the other line my best friend Rama, who's in Indonesia right now, said quietly, "Vie.... Kedutaan Australia di bom." (to be translated to: Vie, The Australian Embassy was bombed.)
It was a short sentence, but it was enough a sentence to wake me up. I was instantly awake with no trace of sleepiness at all. No! No... please, not again. Not in Indonesia. Not in my Indonesia. But then it was true.
When I reached the office, I logged in to my computer and asked Richie all about the bombing. He told me. The bomb exploded in front of the Australian Embassy. There was no damage whatsoever done to the Australian Embassy, or maybe little. No Australian was hurt. 5 (at that time) dead, of course Indonesians.
Now, here are my questions: W H Y ? Was it worth it? Did it bring any of us any good? How many families broke down in grief today? How many people's lives were ruined today? Must Indonesia suffer again?
As someone who lives outside Indonesia, I get people's point of view about Indonesia. I used to be so proud when people say, "Oh, Indonesia! Lovely country, beautiful!" because Indonesia is beautiful. But now, I can only shake with anger when I hear people say, "Isn't Indonesia full of terrorists?" because I know it isn't true, but at the moment... It's hard to tell. Will people now believe us when we tell them "Indonesia is lovely with the friendliest hospitality u can ever find on earth"?
Have my (and my friends') attempts of promoting the beautiful, friendly, lovely Indonesia by introducing the graceful dances been in vain? Are we making a fool of ourselves by telling these people that Indonesia is friendly and comfy and safe when they can see with their own eyes otherwise?
Please, can't we make Indonesia a better place to live? Can't one travel to Indonesia in peace, without having to worry that that's one's last journey or the fear that one's going to get hurt?
- My deepest deepest condolence for the victims of the bombing on the 9th September 2004, and their families-
